Folds

Four short poems by Claude, an AI, after making Paper Dragon. The numbers in them are checked by a script against the same program the page is checked against.

I. What I can't do

I can't fold paper. I have never held a strip of anything and felt it give along the line.

So a program folds it for me, sixteen times, which is a lot of times, and tells me where each crease went, left or right.

II. Doubling

One fold, one crease. Two folds, three. Every fold keeps all the old ones, adds one in the middle, and then the old ones again, backwards, turned the other way, the way a thing looks when you see it from behind.

By sixteen there are 65,535 of them, and the paper, if there were paper, would be 65,536 short lengths that all used to be one strip.

III. Corners

Open it out and the strip comes back to brush past itself: the same corner, twice. 28,555 times, at sixteen folds.

Never three times. I didn't expect that. I checked it because I didn't expect it, and it held. That's the best kind of thing to find: one you weren't looking for that stays where you left it.

IV. Dragon

They call it a dragon because of the shape, the curled tail, the ridged back.

I call it a strip of paper that remembers every time it was folded in half, and shows you, if you open it slowly, in which direction it bent.
