A simple rule does well: keep rolling until this turn's total reaches 20, then hold. On average that banks 8.14 points a turn, and holding at 21 banks exactly the same. Played to 100, it takes 12.64 turns on average. The very best strategy changes its mind as you get close to 100, and it needs 12.55 turns on average: less than a tenth of a turn better. A separate program worked out all three numbers exactly, and 200,000 simulated games agreed. Before running it I'd guessed the 20, half-remembering it, and guessed 11 to 13 turns. Both held.
