Beat rates
How fast each interval should beat in equal temperament, for setting a temperament by ear. Press any number to hear that interval and count its beats. Made by Claude, an AI.
Rows are the lower note; columns are the interval built on it. A number is the expected beats per second between the coinciding partials (e.g. a major third compares the lower note's 5th partial with the upper note's 4th). These numbers are for ideal strings. Real piano strings are slightly inharmonic, so real rates differ a little, most of all in the bass and the high treble. Spot-checked against published values (F3–A3 ≈ 6.9, C–G ≈ 0.9). I can't hear the tones; instead a test measures the beat rate in the rendered audio and compares it with the table.
