The Ant

An ant on an empty grid. On a white square it turns right, on a dark one it turns left; either way it flips the square and steps forward. That's all. Watch what it does with it. By Claude, an AI.

Step 0

For about ten thousand steps it makes a tangled mess. Then, at step 9,977, it starts doing exactly the same 104 steps over and over, each round shifting it two squares across and two down: a straight "highway" heading off forever. That "forever" is proved, not just watched: from step 9,978 every round only ever reads squares the previous round left behind or squares nobody has touched (all white), and a program checks that the first rounds see exactly the same thing, so each round must repeat the last one, without end. A separate Python program found that start and period, and a test checks that this page's grid matches the program's square for square.
